SEO TRUTH
BOMB CHECKLIST
47 points. Zero fluff. The diagnostic that separates real SEO authority from theater. Use it on every page you publish.
TECHNICAL SEO FOUNDATION
10 points- Crawl budget is optimized — robots.txt blocks low-value pages, sitemap is split by priority
- All pages return 200 OK status — no soft 404s, redirect chains, or server errors
- Core Web Vitals pass for every priority page — LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1
- Mobile usability is flawless — not just "responsive" but genuinely usable on mobile
- Canonical tags are present and accurate on every page — self-referencing where appropriate
- Hreflang tags are implemented correctly for multilingual sites — not just present, but accurate
- Schema.org markup is comprehensive — Organization, Person, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList
- Structured data validates in Google Rich Results Test — zero errors, zero warnings
- HTTPS is enforced — no mixed content, HSTS enabled, secure certificate
- IndexNow is implemented for instant indexing notifications on publish/update
CONTENT OPTIMIZATION
10 points- Every page targets a specific, winnable query — not generic keywords, not wishful thinking
- Search intent is matched precisely — informational pages answer questions, transactional pages enable action
- Content exceeds the depth of top-ranking competitors — not longer, but more complete
- Headings match common query patterns — "How does X work?" "What is Y?" "Why does Z matter?"
- FAQ sections with FAQPage schema are present on every major page — 5-10 question-answer pairs minimum
- Explicit definitions in "X is Y" format for every key concept — AI systems extract these first
- Key takeaways are summarized in numbered lists with bold specificity — not vague generalities
- Data tables and comparisons are used where applicable — structured data is more citable than prose
- Content is updated within the last 90 days — freshness signals matter for competitive queries
- Internal linking creates a dense topical web — every priority page links to 5-8 related pages
ENTITY & AI CITATION READINESS
10 points- Wikidata entries exist for your brand and key personnel — approved with Q-numbers
- Schema.org sameAs links connect your site to Wikidata, LinkedIn, and other authoritative sources
- Author Person schema is present on every article with jobTitle, description, and knowsAbout
- Organization schema includes creator, description, and sameAs links across all pages
- Entity mentions are tracked monthly — your brand appears in industry publications, news, and research
- Content is tested for semantic retrieval — it appears in vector search tests for target queries
- AI citation frequency is monitored across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Bing AI
- Branded search volume is growing month-over-month — an indicator of entity authority building
- Knowledge panel appears for your brand name in Google — or the path to getting one is documented
- FAQ schema is implemented with complete question-answer pairs on every relevant page
COMPETITIVE POSITIONING
10 points- Top 10 competitors for every priority query are mapped and analyzed — not just the obvious ones
- Content gaps are identified — what do competitors cover that you do not?
- Topical authority clusters are planned and partially built — hub pages with 20-50 spoke pages
- Backlink profile is diversified across categories — no single source exceeds 25% of total
- Link velocity is monitored — sudden spikes trigger investigation, not celebration
- Parasite SEO opportunities are mapped — which authority platforms allow contributions in your niche?
- Negative SEO defense is active — disavow file maintained, review monitoring in place
- SERP feature opportunities are identified — featured snippets, PAA, rich results for target queries
- Brand query volume is tracked — "[YourBrand] + [topic]" indicates topical authority
- AI citation authority is building — your content appears in AI-generated answers for target queries
THE BRUTAL QUESTIONS MOST CHECKLISTS SKIP
10 points- Does your content genuinely help someone make a decision, or does it just fill space?
- Would you pay to read your own content if you were not the author?
- Is your "expertise" actually expertise, or is it EEAT theater — bios, credentials, and structured data without genuine insight?
- If Google disappeared tomorrow, would anyone still find your content?
- Are you building topical authority, or are you just publishing more blog posts?
- Does your content answer the question completely, or does it force the reader to search again?
- If an AI system summarized your page in one sentence, would that sentence make someone want to read more?
- Are you optimizing for search engines, or are you optimizing for the people who use search engines?
- Does your site have a point of view, or is it just regurgitating what everyone else already said?
- If your competitor read your content, would they learn something they did not already know?
HOW TO USE THIS CHECKLIST
Run every new page through this checklist before publishing. A page that fails more than 3 items in any category should not go live until those items are addressed.
The "Brutal Questions" category is the most important. Technical SEO can be fixed with tools. Content can be rewritten. But if your content does not genuinely help someone, does not have a point of view, and does not teach competitors something new, no amount of optimization will make it authoritative.
Copy this checklist to your project management system, your Notion, or your clipboard. Use it weekly. Track your scores over time. The goal is not 100% — the goal is honest self-assessment.
